NFL insider: Panthers trading up to 2025 draft’s No. 3 overall pick ‘on the table’

Can the Carolina Panthers and the New York Giants do a bit of repeat business in the coming days?

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio and Chris Simms recently chatted about Carolina’s potential trade prospects for the 2025 NFL draft. With president of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan leaving the possibility of a move out in the open earlier this week, Florio and Simms believe the Panthers are in a “sweet spot” at the eighth overall pick.

The Panthers could, as hinted towards by Morgan multiple times throughout the offseason, trade down—giving a quarterback-needy organization a chance to jump the New Orleans Saints at No. 9. But they could also, according to Florio, make a jump themselves for a rather big need of their own . . .

This wouldn’t be the time that the Panthers and Giants converge on a major deal centered on a pass rusher. The two teams struck a blockbuster trade last spring, when Carolina traded away two-time Pro Bowler Brian Burns to New York.

If the Panthers do ultimately trade up to No. 3 for Abdul Carter (or even Travis Hunter), we could look back to the 2023 agreement between the Houston Texans and the Arizona Cardinals for the bones of a swap. Here’s how that went down . . .

Houston received: Third overall pick (OLB Will Anderson Jr.), 105th overall pick

Arizona received: 12th overall pick, 33rd overall pick, 2024 first-round pick, 2024 fourth-round pick

That price, however, may be too hefty for Morgan and the Panthers—who are looking to add depth to their growing roster. While the second half of the 2024 campaign was a very encouraging one for Carolina, they’re more than just one player away from contention.

But if the right guy and the right deal is there, you never know.
