Jeremy Fowler Gives Insight on Terry McLaurin, Commanders

As part of a minicamp roundup segment on SportsCenter, Fowler covered a bevy of topics, including McLaurin’s contract.

Terry McLaurin, so this one’s a little different because he skipped minicamp, he’s been unhappy with his contract situation,” Fowler said. “I talked to somebody with the team who said, ‘Look, we want McLaurin to be a Commander for life.’”

“It’s just probably been a little bit slower than everyone expected,” Fowler added. “These are hard deals to do, that receiver market is well above $30 million per year, he’s a star receiver, so, they got five or six weeks before camp to try to shake that out and we’ll see what happens.”

Fowler mentioned $30 million, which is around the range of Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

The market has gone well above $30 million in some cases. This includes Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson ($35 million) and Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, who currently has the top average annual salary at $40.25 million.

The Commanders drafted McLaurin out of Ohio State with the 76th overall pick in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Since then, he’s been a second-team All-Pro, gone to two Pro Bowls, and was part of the PFWA All-Rookie Team.

Over his career, he’s caught 460 passes for 6,379 yards and 38 touchdowns. While he played just 14 and 15 games over his first two seasons, respectively, McLaurin has been remarkably consistent when it comes to staying healthy and being on the field.

He’s played all 17 games in each of the last four seasons. McLaurin has also had at least 1,002 yards in every season of his career except for his rookie season, where he finished with 919.

In 2024, he caught 82 passes on 117 targets from rookie signal-caller Jayden Daniels for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. The 1,096 yards was his third-best in a single season, and the 13 touchdowns were almost as many as the previous three seasons combined.

The Commanders traded for wide receiver Deebo Samuel to pair him with McLaurin and give Daniels a dynamic receiving duo. With McLaurin, who turns 30 this season, entering the final year of his contract, securing his future could be crucial to the team’s success as they look to rebound from last season’s NFC Championship loss to the Eagles.

Getting McLaurin under contract should be of top priority to the Commanders with the 2025 season quickly approaching, and it appears head coach Dan Quinn understands the situation and is confident a deal will get done.
