According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, Marner and his camp have decided not to engage in any discussions with the Maple Leafs about a potential contract extension. As it stands, all signs point to the 27-year-old winger testing the open market on July 1.

And I think everyone knows the way this is going to be headed: on July 1st, he’s going to hit the market, pick a team, set a contract, and he’s not coming back to Toronto.”
This is a significant shift for both Marner and the Leafs. Marner, who was drafted fourth overall by Toronto in 2015, has spent his entire NHL career in the blue and white, becoming one of the league’s most consistent playmakers.
But with no communication between the two sides, the writing appears to be on the wall.

While free agency opens on July 1, it might not be the day Marner signs. Friedman mentioned there’s a real possibility that Marner will take his time, scheduling Zoom or in-person meetings with interested teams before making a final decision.
This approach suggests Marner is looking for more than just a paycheck; he’s weighing fit, team culture, and long-term potential. “Maybe he goes and visits one or two places,” Friedman added. “This might not be a quick July 1st deal. He wants to do it right.”
Marner is considered the top free agent available this offseason and could become the highest-paid winger in NHL history. Reports have already linked him to several teams, including the Carolina Hurricanes, Vegas Golden Knights, Los Angeles Kings, and Anaheim Ducks. The Hurricanes, in particular, are reportedly prepared to offer him a seven-year deal exceeding $14 million annually, a number that would certainly make headlines.
Marner’s impact in Toronto has been undeniable. He ranks fifth all-time in franchise history with 741 points in 657 games and sits fourth in assists with 520. His postseason record is equally strong, with 63 points in 70 playoff games.
Despite individual success, Marner has faced criticism during the Leafs’ playoff struggles over the years. The organization’s repeated early exits have led to speculation that the front office may consider major roster changes, and letting Marner walk in free agency may be part of that plan.
With less than a month to go, the Maple Leafs find themselves in a tight spot.
