Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner could be heading in an unexpected direction as the 2025 NHL free agency approaches.
According to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, Marner is reportedly exploring a short-term, high-value contract rather than committing to a long-term deal. The idea is to bet on himself now and re-enter the market in 2027, just as the NHL salary cap is projected to rise sharply.

According to LeBrun, two teams familiar with the situation believe Marner is considering a two-year contract worth $12 million to $13 million per season. It’s a bold approach that offers immediate financial gain while maintaining flexibility for another free agency run at age 30.
The major incentive behind this strategy is timing.
The NHL and NHLPA estimate the salary cap could exceed $113 million in the next couple of years. By keeping his options open, Marner could land an even more lucrative deal when teams have more room to spend.

Marner just wrapped up a six-year, $65.4 million deal with Toronto. Over that span, he has averaged more than a point per game and remained one of the league’s most productive forwards. In the 2024–25 season, the 28-year-old posted 102 points with 27 goals and 75 assists.
Marner Reportedly Drawing Interest From the Kings, Golden Knights, and Stars
LeBrun also listed a few teams that could be interested in signing Marner should he leave Toronto.
The Vegas Golden Knights and Los Angeles Kings are reportedly on that list. Both franchises have playoff ambitions and cap space to pursue a top-tier winger.
The Dallas Stars were also named, although their chances may be limited due to a large contract commitment to Mikko Rantanen. Still, LeBrun remarked, “Never say never.”
Toronto’s continued playoff exits may be pushing Marner to reconsider his future. Despite standout regular-season play, the Maple Leafs bowed out in the second round again. Marner didn’t score in his final five playoff games, fueling criticism.
Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has spoken publicly about the need to change the team’s makeup, stating that the current core may not be working. He confirmed that discussions with Marner have taken place, though no deal is in place. Sources report that Marner will definitely be leaving the Leafs.
