Former Alabama head coach Nick Saban acknowledges that the College Football Playoff committee has a tough job. That said, Saban feels like the committee could make better selections by going on a field trip instead of doing all of its work in the classroom.
Saban pointed out Friday afternoon on The Pat McAfee Show that bowl representatives used to attend games throughout the season before deciding who to invite to their bowl. He believes that the playoff committee should do that, too.
“You know, in the old days, when the Sugar Bowl wanted to see if they were going to pick you, or the Orange Bowl, or the Rose Bowl, or the Fiesta Bowl or whatever, they would come watch you play,” Nick Saban said. “So at least they could eyeball the team and see what kind of team… especially in the line positions, because those are critical matchups.
“And then they would decide how good the teams were based on that. But you know, you’ve gotta get out of the conference room to be able to do that.”
Saban added that if the playoff committee had gone out and watched games, it would have known that some teams that made the CFP this year were not capable of competing at the highest level. He feels that the games last weekend would have been better if the committee had watched contenders play in person throughout the year.
“I thought there were some good games, but I also thought there was some evidence that there may have been three or four better teams that they could’ve put in the playoffs, I guess was my take from it,” Saban said. “But I think that would be helpful in the future. Less emphasis on how many wins and more emphasis on who you beat.”
During the first round of the College Football Playoff, all four games were decided by double digits. The closest game by score was Notre Dame‘s 27-17 win over Indiana. However, the Irish were up 27-3 late in the fourth quarter, before Indiana added some garbage time points.
It will be interesting to see if the committee takes Saban’s advice in the future and goes out and watches games in person.
