CORVALLIS — Oregon State came into the weekend with a chance to make a statement against one of the few marquee opponents on its regular-season schedule.

Instead, the Beavers fell flat and opened the series with their ugliest loss of the year thus far.

No. 11 Oregon State fell, 12-0, to No. 12 UC Irvine on Friday at Goss Stadium. In a battle of D1 Baseball’s highest-ranked West Coast programs, OSU struggled mightily in every department.

Friday marked the Beavers’ worst loss at Goss Stadium since May 31, 2014.

“They beat us in every aspect of the game,” Oregon State head coach Mitch Canham said. “We all saw that. Playing a high-quality opponent like that — in essence, that is a postseason type of environment. You’re going to play against a team that is really good and you’re going to play in front of a packed house. The reality is, in order to move on, you have to win the series. So, that’s what we are tasked with right now: Finding a way to get the job done and win the series.”

The Beavers finished the evening 2 for 13 with runners on base and 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position.

On multiple occasions, Oregon State strung together productive early-inning at-bats and created opportunities for their top hitters — Aiva Arquette, Trent Caraway and Gavin Turley — to do damage at the plate. But the trio of highly touted Major League Baseball Draft prospects went just 1 for 10 on the night.

The bottom of the Beavers’ order didn’t fare any better; Canon Reeder, Tyce Peterson, Wilson Weber and Jacob Krieg went a combined 0 for 13 and struck out 11 times.

“(Ricky Ojeda), their reliever, had some really good stuff,” Canham said. “I felt like we had a really good game plan going into facing their starter. Just did not execute it. Ojeda, really, primarily, is a fastball guy. And it’s got a lot of life to it — low slot, good extension, good ride. … We were underneath everything. The resutls weren’t great and there’s a lot of whiff off of (pitches) that we have been preparing for.”

Oregon State ace left-hander Nelson Keljo returned to the Friday night role after missing last week’s start due to a minor tricep injury. He was on a tight pitch count, however, and went just 1⅓ innings on 41 pitches.

“He’ll just continue to build up from where he was at today,” Canham said. “He got to his pitch limit, but throwing upper 30s (pitches) in the first, we weren’t going to try to expel him too much more. But it was good to see him get back out there on the bump. Each of those hitters was working full count, full count, full count. I thought he executed some good pitches but call didn’t go our way on some of those. You’ve just got to overcome and keep moving.”

Oregon State got two bright innings from sophomore reliever Eric Segura, who struck out five of the first six batters he faced. But, with two outs in the sixth, Easton Talt misplayed a fly ball in right field that would have ended the inning had he caught it.

Instead, the Anteaters scored a run on the error and then tacked on three more runs to bust the game open before the inning ended.

“There were a handful of plays I thought we could have made,” Canham said. “Aiva made a tremendous play on a groundball up the middle, but we just were not entirely sharp. When you allow three crooked numbers to happen. … You can fall on that, but I don’t think it’s ever acceptable to feel deflated on it.”

The Beavers will look to salvage the series at 1:35 p.m. Saturday. Freshman righty Dax Whitney (3-2, 3.38) is slated to start for OSU, while sophomore righty Trevor Hansen (5-0, 4.42) is the projected starter for UC Irvine.

Oregon State vs. UC Irvine live updates

Final: UC Irvine 12, Oregon State 0

Wilson Weber drew a two-out walk. But that’s all Oregon State would get in the ninth as Jacob Krieg struck out looking to end the game.

Zach Edwards replaced Max Fraser midway through the inning and was hit hard by UC Irvine. Rowan Felsch ripped a two-run double down the left-field line, then Will Bermudez smashed a double to the right-field gap to make it 10-0.

The Anteaters batted around in the ninth and led 12-0 by the time the dust settled.

Oregon State’s 2-3-4 hitters — Aiva Arquette, Trent Caraway and Gavin Turley — went down in order.

The trio of OSU stars is a combined 1-for-10 on the night.

Blake Penso clobbered a solo homer to left-center field to tack on an insurance run for the Anteaters.

AJ Singer cracked a two-out single. But the Beavers once again failed to put a run on the board as the next batter, Easton Talt, struck out swinging.

Sophomore righty Wyatt Queen took over on the mound to start the seventh inning. Queen struck out the first batter he faced and worked around a one-out single to produce a scoreless frame.

OSU catcher Wilson Weber threw Rowan Felsch out at second on a stolen base attempt to end the inning.

It was nothing doing for the Beavers in the sixth. Gavin Turley, Canon Reeder and Tyce Peterson went down in order.

Oregon State shortstop Aiva Arquette made a jaw-dropping, spinning throw on a ground ball up the middle to record the first out of the inning.

But, with two outs, Easton Talt misplayed a line drive to right field that resulted in a run to bolster UC Irvine’s lead. The error snowballed for the Beavers; Frankie Carney ripped a single through the left side two batters later to make it 4-0.

The rocky inning continued as Anthony Martinez tacked on two more runs with a single up the middle.

AJ Singer and Easton Talt each put together scrappy at-bats that resulted in singles to give the Beavers two on with one out. Then, Aiva Arquette was hit in the head to load the bases.

But OSU’s poor luck with runners in scoring position persisted. Trent Caraway scorched a ground ball up the middle and UC Irvine turned a slick 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

The Beavers are 0-of-5 with runners in scoring position.

Segura stayed on for the Beavers and delivered another stellar 1-2-3 inning. He struck out the final two batters of the frame and now has five punchouts on the night.

Gavin Turley smashed a leadoff double to get the Beavers’ offense going. Canon Reeder bunted him over to third. Once again, though, the Beavers couldn’t capitalize. Kelly sat down Tyce Peterson and Wilson Weber in order to end the threat.

Eric Segura took over on the mound in the top of the fourth for the Beavers and wasted no time going after the Anteaters. He struck out the first three batters he faced, all swinging.

Easton Talt gave the Beavers a much-needed spark with a double off the right-field wall to put runners on second and third with one out.

But Oregon State could not cash in as its two best hitters — AIva Arquette and Trent Caraway — were retired to end the inning.

The Anteaters loaded the bases against OSU reliever Zach Kmatz. But he got Rowan Felsch to fly out to the warning track to end the threat and escape the inning unscathed.

Gavin Turley drew a leadoff walk but UC Irvine starter Riley Kelly struck out the next three batters.

Nelson Keljo’s evening ended after just 1 1/3 innings and 41 pitches. The star junior was on a tight pitch count this week as he missed last week’s start due to a tricep issue.

Freshman right-hander Zach Kmatz replaced Keljo on the mound and struck out the first two batters he faced to retire the side.

Easton Talt drew a leadoff walk, but UC Irvine starter Riley Kelly rolled a double play one batter later and held the Beavers hitless in the first.

UC Irvine was all over Oregon State starter Nelson Keljo from the get-go.

Frankie Carney tagged Keljo for a leadoff double. Five batters later, James Castagnola smashed a two-run single to give the Anteaters a 2-0 lead.
