Tennessee basketball opened the doors to Pratt Pavilion on Tuesday afternoon to give the media a peak at the new-look Volunteers. UT is in the third week of summer practice after it began at the beginning of June. It’ll practice for two months before concluding at the end of July.
It was odd to be at a Tennessee practice that didn’t feature Zakai Zeigler or Jahmai Mashack, but the more things change, the more they remain the same. Rick Barnes’ country twang still echoes throughout the facility, and there’s still a plethora of talent on the court. This year’s group will look different than the last couple iterations of Barnes’ teams. The blueprint remains the same.
I was as impressed with my first look at the Vols as I could responsibly be for a June 17 practice. The newcomers are still learning the different drills Barnes puts them through after all. I still walked away with three main thoughts: Nate Ament is the real deal, I think they’re going to be able to shoot the basketball pretty well and the frontcourt is going to cause a lot of problems for opponents.
