OFFICIAL: Fox joins George Mason Basketball Staff

I mentioned this move back on 5/28 in the DAILY DIRT. It’s now been made official – Andy Fox has been hired as an assistant at George Mason. Here’s the statement from GMU:

George Mason University men’s basketball head coach Tony Skinn (’06) has announced that Andy Fox will join his staff as an assistant coach.

A seasoned basketball tactician with nearly two decades of coaching experience across all levels of Division I, Fox has mentored seven NBA players and 34 all-conference student-athletes during his coaching tenure. He most recently served as an assistant coach at Army West Point during the 2024-25 campaign.

“Andy is a talented, experienced coach,” Skinn said. “He has a great basketball mind and he’s been a DOBO, an assistant coach and a general manager at the highest levels. That versatility brings a unique skill set to our staff. In this landscape, Andy can do so many different things and he will provide an extremely valuable perspective as we look to continue moving our program in an upward direction.”

This past season, Fox helped lead the Black Knights to a historic season, which included the program’s first postseason win in 55 years. The team matched its best-ever Patriot League record and advanced to the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational.

“My family and I are thankful to join Coach Skinn’s program and the George Mason community at such an exciting point of growth and resurgence,” Fox said. “I will work relentlessly to help our student-athletes develop and to continue the proud tradition of success this program has built and fostered across decades.”

Fox came to Army after five seasons at Vanderbilt, during which he served as director of scouting (2019-21), general manager (2021-22) and associate head coach (2022-24). During his tenure in Nashville under former NBA All-Star Jerry Stackhouse, he guided the Commodores to a pair of NIT appearances, as well as a 22-win season as associate head coach in 2022-23. That 2022-23 squad placed fourth in the SEC, the program’s best-finish in 13 seasons, while Stackhouse garnered SEC Coach of the Year honors in the process.

The program also ranked as the most improved in the SEC over his first three seasons at Vanderbilt, jumping 89 spots in the NET over that span.

Fox recruited and developed elite talent while with the Commodores. He was instrumental in the signing of the program’s 2022 and 2023 classes, which ranked No. 12 and No. 32 nationally on Rivals.com. What’s more, he worked closely with a pair of current NBA starters in Aaron Nesmith (Indiana Pacers) and Scottie Pippen Jr. (Memphis Grizzlies), while also aiding in the development of 2023 SEC Defensive Player of the Year and former Milwaukee Buck Liam Robbins.

As general manager in 2021-22, Fox served as the first full-time basketball specific GM in Power 5 college basketball.  In this role Fox oversaw the Commodores’ on and off-campus recruiting, underclassmen recruiting, program advancement and strategy, as well as coordinated non-conference scheduling and elite HS camps.  Additionally, he served as the lead for program capital projects and enhancements, including the design and planning of the Huber Practice Center and Huber Locker Room.

Fox served on the SEC Basketball Scheduling working group during his time on staff while also organizing the program’s foreign tour of France and Italy.  On that tour, he coordinated with campus partners to develop “The American Experience in France and Italy in Literature, Music, and Film” – a 3-credit Special Topics course that was piloted with the men’s program on the trip in the Summer 2022.  In addition, he created and ran Tipoff at TopGolf – a Preseason Tipoff Event and Auction – and was instrumental in the foundational launch and growth of the Anchor Impact collective.

Prior to his time in Nashville, Fox served as the director of basketball operations at Louisiana Tech for four seasons. In that role, he worked under head coach Erik Konkol, a former George Mason assistant coach, and alongside Coach Skinn, who was on the Bulldogs staff as an assistant from 2015-18. Fox handled team travel, coordination of student-athlete recruiting, directing summer basketball camps, game and practice planning, basketball analytics and scheduling while serving as the program’s compliance liaison and budget manager.

Louisiana Tech registered an impressive 86 victories in his time in Ruston — including a pair of 23-win seasons. He was instrumental in the development of Bulldog forward Erik McCree, who went on to play for the Utah Jazz. Off the court, Fox also created and spearheaded the Dinner with the Dogs Annual Tipoff Event and Auction, which served as a major fundraiser for the men’s basketball foundation.

Prior to Louisiana Tech, Fox spent five years as an assistant coach and director of operations at Tulane. He helped Tulane to back-to-back postseason appearances with a trip to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament in 2012-13 and to the College Basketball Invitational in 2013-14.

While at Tulane, Fox contributed to the recruitment and development of NBA players Cameron Reynolds (Minnesota Timberwolves) and Melvin Frazier (Orlando Magic). In 2018, Frazier became the first NBA draft pick from Tulane since 1997.

On the recruiting trail, Fox helped the Green Wave recruit Ricky Tarrant, the 2012 Conference USA Freshman of the Year. Tarrant became the second player in league history to earn Freshman of the Year and first team all-conference honors in the same season since Derrick Rose.

Fox also spent four seasons as an assistant coach at The Citadel. While there, he helped guide the Bulldogs to their most successful stretch in program history, including a school-record 20 wins and the program’s first postseason appearance in 2009. Fox was a key member of The Citadel coaching staff that recruited and developed all-time leading scorer Cameron Wells.

Prior to his arrival at The Citadel, Fox served as a graduate assistant at Tennessee, one year each under Bruce Pearl and Buzz Peterson. While with the Volunteers in 2006, the team captured the SEC East title and earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in 2004 in economics and health science from Cornell (Iowa), where he played basketball for four years. Fox was fifth all-time in assists and seventh all-time in steals in school history. He was a two-year captain, earning All-Iowa Conference honors in 2004.

Fox completed his master’s in sports psychology from Tennessee’s sports studies program in 2006.

Fox and his wife, Tiffany, have a son, Brendan, and two daughters: Emery and Camille.
