Ohio State At The Amegy Bank College Baseball Series: What To Know

Ohio State took a big swing in the offseason with the hire of Justin Haire. The Buckeyes have a chance to score on that swing in a big way when they head to Globe Life Field for the third weekend of the College Baseball Series.

Haire coached Campbell to five regular-season Big South Conference championships and four NCAA Tournament appearances from 2018 through 2023. Ohio State, meanwhile, looks to end a postseason drought dating back to 2019.

The Buckeyes will be challenged right away under their new leadership, facing one of the toughest early-season schedules in the sport — including the College Baseball Series.

Ohio State College Baseball Series Schedule

  • vs. Auburn – Friday, Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. ET
  • vs. Baylor – Saturday, March 1 at 3 p.m. ET
  • vs. Oregon State – Sunday, March 2 at 12 p.m. ET

Ohio State Baseball Names to Know

Reggie Bussey

Oakland University transfer Reggie Bussey brings a consistent bat and game-changing speed on the base paths to Ohio State. Bussey hit .336 in 2024 and swiped 31 bases, tied for 19th-most among all Div. I players.

Bussey’s speed and ability to get on base make him a prime candidate to be a standout lead-off hitter for the Buckeyes in 2025.

Trey Lipsey

Entering his fourth year at Ohio State, Trey Lipsey debuted with a bang in 2022 hitting .295 and stealing 14 bases. Lipsey rebounded from a sophomore in 2023 with a solid 2024, hitting six home runs and driving in a career-best 45 runs. The outfielder also stole 10 bases as a junior.

With his experience and lofty potential, Lipsey is a quality veteran to provide the foundation for Ohio State’s first season under Haire.

Ryan Miller

First baseman and catcher Ryan Miller joined Ohio State from the 2023 national championship-winning Tennessee Volunteers and showed plenty of pop in limited appearances. Miller bopped eight home runs in just 77 at-bats spread over 30 games.

With his ability to play first or behind the plate, Miller could see more opportunities in 2025. If he can hit with the same power he showed in 2024 throughout a full season, Ohio State could have a breakout All-Big Ten caliber hitter.

Tyler Pettorini

Ohio State’s top returning batter for 2025, Tyler Pettorini hit .309 with team-highs of nine home runs and 49 RBI, and his .500 slugging percentage was tops among Buckeyes with at least 100 at-bats.

The senior can play third and second base equally effectively in addition to hitting with consistency. He’ll provide the cornerstone for Ohio State’s Big Ten aspirations in 2025.

Blaine Wynk

A rising prospect for the MLB draft, right-handed pitcher Blaine Wynk was excellent coming out of the Ohio State bullpen in 2024. Wynk came into the program from Div. II Findlay and transitioned seamlessly, putting up a 3.38 ERA with 38 strikeouts over 40 innings and just nine walks.

Wynk’s lively arm and 6-foot-3 frame make him an intriguing potential pro. In the meantime, he’s a stalwart of the Buckeyes pitching staff poised for a big 2025.

Ohio State College Baseball Series Opponents

Auburn

Although tabbed for the bottom half of the SEC, Auburn has a lineup in 2025 capable of making a run to Omaha. The Buckeyes’ first opponents at the College Baseball Series feature a veteran corps with Cooper McMurray, Ike Irish and Cade Belyeu leading the way.

Baylor

Behind an excellent outfield with Ty Johnson, Enzo Apodaca and preseason All-Big 12 selection Wesley Jordan, Baylor has the pieces of wildly exceed expectations in a deep conference. The Bears have the shortest trek to Arlington, and perhaps the most to gain among the stacked field in the Series’ third weekend.

Oregon State

Perennial national powerhouse Oregon State may not have a conference in 2025, but the Beavers have all the makings of a national championship contender. The addition of Washington transfer Aiva Arquette to join a lineup with powerful home-run hitter Gavin Turley helps soften the blow of Oregon State losing 2024 No. 1 overall MLB draft pick Travis Bazzana.
