Ohio State football safety Lathan Ransom taken by Carolina in fourth round of NFL draft

Former Ohio State safety Lathan Ransom was selected by Carolina in the fourth round of the NFL draft on April 26.

The Panthers took him with the No. 122 overall pick.

Ransom overcame two serious injuries in his Buckeye career to become an important member of OSU’s top-ranked defense. He teamed with sophomore Caleb Downs to form an elite safety duo.

Ransom earned a reputation early in his OSU career as a hard-hitting fearless player. That didn’t change even after he broke both the fibula and tibia in the 2023 Rose Bowl. He surprised many by being ready for the ’23 season opener.

But that season ended with a non-contact Lisfranc foot injury he suffered against Wisconsin late in the year. He showed no ill effects of the injury in his final season.

Lathan Ransom highlights

Against Tennessee in the first round of the College Football Playoff, the Volunteers rallied to cut OSU’s lead to 21-10 at halftime and got the ball first in the third quarter. But Ransom made a tackle for loss on third down to end that drive early, and the Buckeyes coasted to victory.

Ransom also made a big play against Texas in the CFP semifinals. With the Longhorns at the OSU 1, Ransom and Davison Igbinosun made the tackle for a 7-yard loss after Downs shot the gap and disrupted the play.

Lathan Ransom stats

Ransom started 37 games for the Buckeyes and earned first-team All-Big Ten honors last season. He had 76 tackles last year, including nine for losses.
