COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State’s regular season loss to Oregon has now influenced a new rule coming to college football.
NCAA Football Rules Committee proposed a change on Friday, giving offenses the option to reset the game clock in the final two minutes of each half if the defense commits a too many men on the field penalty and the extra defender or defenders participate in the play. If the additional player or players are attempting to leave the field and have no impact, there will still be no clock adjustment.
One can argue that this rule directly resulted from a play that helped decide a 32-31 win for the Ducks over the Buckeyes on Oct. 12.
With 10 seconds left and OSU trailing by one point, an extra Oregon player defender ran on the field right before the ball was snapped on a third-and-25. Following an incompletion and too-many-men-on-the-field penalty against Oregon, the Buckeyes moved the ball forward 5 yards but lost four seconds on the clock as it is considered a live-ball foul.
Losing those seconds impacted the following play on a Will Howard scramble where the veteran quarterback failed to slide in time for Ohio State to call a timeout and kick a potential game-winning field goal.
OSU would avenge the loss in a 41-21 win in the Rose Bowl on its way to a national title. But that was still one of two losses that kept the Buckeyes out of the Big Ten Championship Game and unable to get a bye in the first 12-team College Football Playoff.
The rule, and a few other proposed new rules, will be sent to schools for review before the NCAA’s playing rules oversight panel meets to approve or deny the changes in April.
Spring visitor
Ohio State offensive line target Sam Greer has set his unofficial visit schedule for the spring, with OSU expected to be among the schools that will host him.
The No. 172 player and No. 15 offensive tackle in the 2026 class will be in Columbus on March 17 as the Buckeyes kick off the first of 15 spring practices. Greer is a four-star recruit from Archbishop Hoban High School with 23 offers.
