Oklahoma QB John Mateer explains his mindset heading into spring football

New Oklahoma Sooners starting quarterback John Mateer has had plenty of expectations placed on his shoulders ahead of his first season in Norman. Fourth-year OU head coach Brent Venables brought both Mateer and his offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle to Oklahoma to fix an offense that was one of the worst in all of college football last season.

Mateer spoke to the media for the first time as a Sooner on Wednesday and explained his mindset on his new team.

“People say I have swag,” Mateer said. “I just play football. I have the ball in my hand every play, I get the opportunity to do something with it, that camera’s on me all the time, so I guess I have swag. Some people say I have toughness. I just feel like I have an obligation to give everything I have for my teammates.”

Oklahoma has typically had one of the best quarterbacks in all of college football under center on a year-to-year basis. But that reputation took a hit last season, and the Sooners fell to 6-7.

Now, in a pivotal season for Venables and the entire program, it’s Mateer who will have to produce at a very high level as the Sooners try to bounce back in their second year in the SEC.
