DeMarco Murray has emerged as a candidate to become Penn State’s next running backs coach, On3’s Pete Nakos reported Tuesday.
Murray has served as OU’s running backs coach since 2020, making him the second-longest tenured assistant behind offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh. Penn State is looking to fill void left behind by Ja’Juan Seider, who accepted the Notre Dame running backs coach job Sunday.
Murray also spent his college career at OU from 2007-10. He ranks seventh in program history in rushing yards (3,685) and second in rushing touchdowns (50).
Murray then spent seven seasons in the NFL with Dallas (2011-14), Philadelphia (2015) and Tennessee (2016-17). He earned three Pro Bowl selections during that time.
Murray began his coaching career in 2019 as a running backs coach for Arizona before he returned to OU.

The Sooners have had two players, Kennedy Brooks (2021) and Eric Gray (2022), record over 1,000 rushing yards in a season under Murray. They’ve also had two running backs, Rhamondre Stevenson (2021) and Gray (2023), selected in the NFL Draft.
OU struggled to move the ball on the ground last season. It ranked 11th in the SEC in rushing yards per game (155.2) and 13th in rushing touchdowns (17).
Murray was pursued by Ohio State last offseason to become the program’s next running backs coach, but he decided to stay with OU after being offered a three-year deal through January 2027. He received a $225,000 raise in March, bringing his salary last season to $800,000.
