OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss Baseball freshman Owen Paino has been ranked as the No. 48 shortstop in the entire country by D1Baseball before he has even played a game at the college level.
Paino is one of just two freshmen to make the list, the other being Kentucky’s Tyler Bell.
It is another in a long list of preseason accolades for the freshman from New York as he was also ranked No. 6 on Perfect Game’s 2027 MLB Draft Board, No. 7 on Perfect Game’s Fresh Arrivals On Campus, No. 8 on Perfect Game’s Top 75 Collegiate Freshmen, and No. 12 on Baseball America’s Top 25 College Baseball Freshmen.
Paino also headlines an Ole Miss freshman class that is ranked No. 4 in the country by Perfect Game, Baseball America, and D1Baseball.

“I think he’ll make a huge impact right away in a long line of really good shortstops in my decade here. Obviously we’ve had some really good ones that start right away as freshmen and I think he falls into that line too,” 11th-year hitting and third base coach Mike Clement recently said of Paino on RebTalk.
Paino is from Poughkeepsie, New York where he played both baseball and basketball for Roy C. Ketcham High School. He was named the 2024 Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of New York and was a three-time All-League honoree.
