Pa. city still reigns supreme for college basketball fans

Ah, March — there’s a hint of Madness (with a capital “M”) in the air.

And for all you college basketball fans that live in this one city in Pennsylvania, you might be happy to know that the location is still one of the absolute best spots for the sport.

Conducted and published by WalletHub, the annual study has — once again — ranked Philadelphia as the second best city for college basketball fans in the United States.

The City of Brotherly (or “Basketball-y”) Love managed to score the silver after WalletHub researchers ranked it and 295 other cities on the list on certain NCAA metrics. These metrics include “Number of College Basketball (Division 1) Championship Wins;” “Number of Hall of Fame Head Coaches,” and “College-Basketball Fans Engagement,” among others.

“Philadelphia is the second-best city for college basketball, and it has the most Division 1 NCAA teams out of any city at six, coming from La Salle, Penn, Saint Joseph’s. Temple, Villanova, and Drexel,” the study reads. “One interesting fact is that, despite being six teams, these teams are sometimes referred to as the ‘Big Five;’ this moniker persisted even after Drexel was added far later than the other times.

“Philadelphia teams have the most regular season conference wins, at 94 since 1938. They also have four national championship wins, which puts them in seventh place. The city has also had four Hall of Fame coaches, tying them with [number one] Los Angeles.”

Philadelphia wasn’t Pennsylvania’s only representation in the rankings, either: Loretto (13th overall), Lewisburg (83rd), Pittsburgh (95th), Bethlehem (139th), Easton (197th), State College (205th), and Erie (249th) were all included as well.
