Panola College unveils baseball field upgrades with ribbon cutting

With improvements to the grandstands such as more comfortable, covered seating, the Panola College baseball team and administration welcomed the community to the new and improved Jim Reeves Memorial Baseball Field with a ribbon-cutting on Monday.

Panola College President Jessica Pace and former President Greg Powell came together with coaches and others to celebrate improvements to the Panola College baseball field. Joined by the director of the Panola County Chamber of Commerce, Kerri Perot Vance, the red ribbon was cut.

Improvements to the field began in September 2022 and were completed in early January. The project was launched years ago. With collaboration from Powell during and after his time as college president, the City of Carthage and commissioners, and City Manager Steve Williams, the dream has come to fruition.

The planned bleachers have 152 chairs with chair backs, and then an additional 400 bleacher-style seats. Eight units will be accessible. The project also included updating the site’s drainage and some electrical work.

Don Clinton, athletic director and former head baseball coach, explained, “This is something that any baseball coach dreams about. Covered grandstands are something we’ve been talking about since we moved out here in 2004. And here we are, 20 years later. We have it.”

Now, with seats with backs for comfort and covered seating from dugout to dugout, both fans and players can better enjoy home games.

Other improvements have been made to the sound system and press box. These additions will improve community and business engagement with the team along with the help of the city and chamber, officials said. Without help with advertising, improvements, maintenance and other vital components from these entities, Pace said, “This would not be possible.”
