The parents of CJ Dickey, an 18-year-old Bucknell University football player who died last summer after collapsing at practice, filed a lawsuit against the school alleging wrongful death. Court documents show Nicole and Calvin Dickey Sr. filed the lawsuit against Bucknell University in Philadelphia Common Pleas Court on April 2 and say the football program did not take necessary precaution during summer workouts.
CJ Dickey was hospitalized and treated for rhabdomyolysis before he died two days later. Dickey tested positive for sickle cell trait prior to his first football practice at the school and those with the trait have a higher risk of developing rhabdomyolysis, which is a life-threatening situation caused by muscles breaking down or excessive exercise.
In a statement to NBC News, Bucknell University said ,”the death of a student is always a tragic loss. Bucknell University is aware of the lawsuit filed by the parents of CJ Dickey. While the University will not comment on pending litigation, we again extend heartfelt sympathies to CJ’s family, and we will continue to focus on our most important priority — the health and safety of all Bucknell students.”
Dickey’s parents allege in the lawsuit that he told them while in the emergency room that freshmen were forced to do “up-downs” as punishment for other members of the team struggling during workouts. The lawsuit states Dickey, “went into convulsions, was projectile vomiting, and was suffering uncontrollable bouts of diarrhea” while hospitalized.
The Dickey family is seeking compensation for their son’s death from Bucknell University and are asking every detail from that summer workout be released publicly.
“As Nicole and I try to grapple with our new reality, the first thing we want are answers about what happened,” Calvin Dickey Sr. said in a statement shared by attorneys Michael Caspino and Stuart Price to news outlets. “We want to know how this was allowed to happen, and so far, Bucknell has not answered any of our questions.”
