South Carolina head football coach Shane Beamer tantalized the college football world with his argument of conferences getting automatic bids.
SEC analyst Paul Finebaum believes Beamer’s idea is “completely wrong.”
“I understand the seating issue but I believe they are completely wrong about guaranteeing bids,” Finebaum said on ESPN’s Get Up. “There’s something inherently wrong about stacking the deck before the season. The SEC and the Big 10 are by far the best leagues.
“Last year the SEC only got three and there were three schools hanging on the ledge but ultimately you could have a year, more in the Big 10 than in the SEC, where you had two or three elite teams. Then your automatic third or maybe your fourth is an 8-4 team that probably doesn’t belong in there. So I think it’s a bad move right now.”
The majority of criticism surrounding Beamer’s proposition focused on an undeserving team getting a bid due to their conference. While the Gamecocks can’t do much about others, Beamer needs to ensure a smooth minimal-loss season to back up his heavy offseason claims after getting snubbed from the 2024 College Football Playoff field.
There is a contrary belief that automatic bids might give the currently chaotic College Football Playoff structure a semblance of stability, but that’s an “only-if” right now.
What matters for now is the results, more precisely wins, from the top conferences like the SEC and Big Ten — if they even need consideration for the argument.
And that starts with South Carolina football’s 2025 season.
