The Penn State Nittany Lions stay at number 4 in this week’s College Football Playoff Rankings, seeded 6 in the projected brackets. PSU stayed in the top four after a dismantling of the Purdue Boilermakers on the road this past weekend.
After one of the least remarkable weeks in this year’s NCAA FBS football season, with only one top ten team (Tennessee) losing, there wasn’t much change at the top. This past week saw a slew of online press pushing the SEC narrative and questioning the inclusion of teams such as Indiana and, yes, Penn State near the top of the rankings, instead of schools in the SEC that have previously appeared in the playoffs but this year have two losses each, leaving their inclusion somewhat up in the air.
The Big Ten has five teams in the rankings this week; in addition to the top teams of Oregon (#1), Ohio State (#2), Penn State, and Indiana (#5), former Nittany Lion opponent Illinois made its way back into the rankings and into the CFP rankings for the first time this season at #25. This upcoming weekend has a big conference matchup with postseason implications as the surprisingly undefeated Hoosiers head to Columbus to take on the one-loss Buckeyes.
The first round of the playoffs will take place on December 20 and 21, in the home stadiums of the teams seeded 5 through 8. The top four seeds, conference champions all, get automatic byes into the second round.
