Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt has just one full season under his belt in Tempe, but what a 2024 it was. He led the Sun Devils from back-to-back 3-9 seasons to a Big 12 Championship and an appearance in the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal.
His breakout performance earned national attention, including recognition from On3 as college football’s top quarterback heading into the 2025 season.
Now, imagine if Leavitt could declare for the 2025 NFL Draft after that lone year at ASU. Where might league scouts rank the Sun Devils signal caller?
Tackling that hypothetical, Pro Football Focus ranked the top 10 college quarterbacks assuming all were entering the draft. Leavitt came in at No. 7.
The redshirt freshman’s 89.1 PFF grade was ninth among FBS quarterbacks, and he was the only Power Four signal-caller with 80-plus grades both as a passer and as a runner. Leavitt needs to add some mass to his 200-pound frame, but he’s an electric athlete with enough arm talent to start at the NFL level.
The Michigan State transfer had quite a first season under Kenny Dillingham as he threw for 2,885 yards to go alongside 24 TDs and only six interceptions. On the ground, Leavitt ran for 443 yards and five scores on 110 carries.
Now, Leavitt’s not just a rising star, he’s arguably the face of the Sun Devils, especially with running back Cam Skattebo prepping for the draft, and is one of the names to watch in college football this year.
Wide receivers coach Hines Ward even compared Leavitt to Ben Roethlisberger earlier in the offseason, praising his development as a vocal leader on the team.
“This year, he’s taking it to another level, being more of a vocal leader,” Ward told reporters. “Understanding that this is his team, and he wants to lead by example. He’s the first guy out there … and if you mess up or you run a wrong route, he will get on you. That’s what you want. You want that commanding enforcement from your quarterback, understanding that this is a level that I expect everybody to be on.”
He also showed excellent ball security, tying for second in FBS with just three turnover-worthy throws among signal callers with at least 200 dropbacks.
