According to Awful Announcing, Subban compared the intense games in the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament to the NBA All-Star Games, which had not lived up to their potential.
Calling hockey a “different game” than basketball, Subban argued that one cannot “go through the motions in hockey” like they can in the NBA.

The former Canadian defenceman had quite a few words to share on how the NBA has been underperforming in terms of delivering thrills to the audience. Subban asked basketball players what they were playing for. Comparing the sport unfavourably to hockey, the analyst said that hockey players were inspired by the person playing next to them to put in their best efforts.

He proceeded to explain how hockey players remained in the field even after being hurt because that was the culture of the game. This gave the sport an authenticity that resonated with fans. He argued that one must “fight sometimes” for their country since their fans had paid money to watch them compete. Subban said that the NBA did not have this authenticity as of now.
The analyst compared the load management of the two sports and said that NBA players sit out important games for load management, which negatively impacts their relationship with fans. He called on the association and its members to take a closer look at the situation to improve things.

The former hockey player had been asked his opinion on the prospects of a USA vs The World format match in the NBA All-Star Games. Giannis Antetokounmpo is one the backers of the idea. But Subban did not feel that NBA players would be motivated enough for a face-off against other nations.
