President Trump says he will pardon Reds legend Pete Rose
President Donald Trump says he will issue a pardon of the late Pete Rose.In a post late Friday night to his Truth Social account, the president said, “over the next few weeks I will be signing a complete pardon of Pete Rose, who shouldn’t have been gambling on baseball, but only bet on his team winning.”Rose, who died last year at the age of 83, was placed on MLB’s ineligible list in August 1989 after an investigation into his gambling on baseball, which he later admitted to in a 2004 autobiography, keeping him out of the Hall, the greatest honor bestowed on any athlete. In the subsequent years, Rose had reapplied for re-instatement, most recently in 2022, but remained ineligible. This past May, a piece of legislation, primarily sponsored by representatives Tom Young (R-D37) and Bill Seitz (R-D30), along with several co-sponsors, was introduced in an effort to “urge the Commissioner of Major League Baseball to remove Peter Edward ‘Pete’ Rose from Major League Baseball’s permanently ineligible list as soon as possible, and to urge the Baseball Writers’ Association of America and the National Baseball Hall of Fame to include Rose on the Hall of Fame ballot.”The legislation, H.C.R. No. 15, never made it out of a first hearing. In 2016, the Reds inducted Rose into their Hall of Fame. Off the diamond, Rose was enshrined in the WWE Hall of Fame in 2004, after a memorable appearance at WrestleMania in 1998.”He never betted against himself, or the other team. He had the most hits, by far, in baseball history, and won more games than anyone in sports history,” Trump said in the post.
