Rafael Devers is expected to make his Giants debut Tuesday when San Francisco welcomes the Cleveland Guardians to Oracle Park for a three-game series.
However what position Devers will play remains to be seen following Sunday’s blockbuster trade.
Much has been written about his falling out with the Red Sox after Boston brass asked Devers to move from third base to designated hitter and from DH to first base.
However the same requests could be coming in San Francisco. Giants third baseman Matt Chapman, a five-time Gold Glove Award winner, is on the injured list and former Red Sox infielder Dominic Smith is among the rotation at first base.
So will the Giants ask Devers to change positions? President of baseball operations Buster Posey won’t tip his hand.

“I think that’s a conversation that we’re going to have to have with him,” Posey told reporters Sunday night, according to NBC Sports Bay Area. “As much as anything, as I’ve told you guys, I want to do my best to be upfront and transparent with these guys and make sure we’re on the same page. That’s a conversation for myself, Zack (Minasian) and Bob (Melvin) to have with him.”
Posey spoke highly of Devers, who flew to California on Monday.
“The reports that I’ve gotten from other people across the industry are that Raffy is a great teammate, loves to play the game, and I’m excited to be able to have those conversations with him and figure out how he’s going to best fit into our lineup, defensively and offensively,” Posey said.
It will be very interesting to see what lineup manager Bob Melvin submits Tuesday. It will also be interesting to see what kind of reception Devers gets on Friday, when the Red Sox visit San Francisco as part of their three-city, nine-game West Coast road trip.
