Ranking Colorado’s 2025 opponents from easiest to hardest

The release of a team’s schedule has become somewhat of a holiday for fans, especially in the NFL and college football. Last week, the Colorado Buffaloes‘ released their 2025 schedule, and their upcoming slate will feature several interesting matchups in CU’s second season back in the Big 12.

Folsom Field will certainly be rocking from the opening weekend as the Buffs will play seven home games for the first time since 1982. CU will need those early home games with the Buffs rolling out a new starting quarterback in either Kaidon Salter or Julian Lewis.

Here are Colorado’s 2025 regular season opponents ranked from easiest to hardest:

12 — Wyoming Cowboys

Last season was a rough one in Jay Sawvel’s debut season as head coach of the Cowboys. Wyoming enjoyed winning seasons in four of the last five years before crashing down to 3-9 in 2024. The offense was the major issue, as Wyoming ranked 124th in the Football Bowl Subdivision at only 19.3 points a game. The Cowboys will get no reprieve from the Buffs’ defense when Wyoming comes to Folsom Field.

11 — Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens

2025 will mark the Fightin’ Blue Hens’ first season in the FBS ranks as they are set to join Conference USA. Teams normally struggle to make the jump from the Football Championship Subdivision, and I would suspect Delaware will take some lumps when they travel to Folsom Field. Delaware was 9-2 last year but was ineligible for the FCS playoffs because of its impending jump to the FBS.

10 — Arizona Wildcats

The Wildcats were a major disappointment in the Big 12 last season, dropping to 4-8 after a 10-3 season the year prior. Arizona still has quarterback Noah Fifita, but he struggled mightily in his first season under head coach Brent Brennan. The Wildcats have also lost players such as wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan and defensive back Tacario Davis.

While I do believe in Willie Fritz’s coaching chops, I also think the Cougars are a few years away from being competitive in the Big 12. Houston’s defense took a huge step forward last year, but the Cougars were doomed by a lackluster offensive attack. CU has the advantage on both sides of the ball and should take its first Big 12 game on the road.

8 — West Virginia Mountaineers

How will the Mountaineers look in Rich Rodriguez’s first season back in Morgantown? Rodriguez returns after West Virginia struggled to a 6-7 season under former coach Neal Brown. The Buffs should be favored in this game, but will they be looking ahead to a brutal two-game stretch that follows?

7 — TCU Horned Frogs

CU’s last matchup against TCU was a high-scoring affair, marking Deion Sanders’ first win as head coach of the Buffs. TCU bounced back after a down year in 2023 to win nine games last season but largely avoided many of the Big 12’s marquee teams.

The Buffs’ season opener represents their toughest matchup during the nonconference slate with Georgia Tech coming to Boulder. The Yellow Jackets won seven games in the regular season before falling to Vanderbilt in the Birmingham Bowl.

5 — Iowa State Cyclones

Next season, CU will face all three teams that tied the Buffs atop the Big 12 standings, including Iowa State. The Cyclones accomplished their first-ever double-digit win season last year and return QB Rocco Becht for his third season as the starter.

4 — Utah Utes

I don’t think the Utes are going to be down for long. Utah has shown itself to be one of the better teams in the country under head coach Kyle Whittingham, and Salt Lake City has been a house of horrors for the Buffs in recent history.

3 — BYU Cougars

CU will be out for revenge after losing the Alamo Bowl to BYU, but the Cougars have a lot of talent and one of the best coaches in the conference in Kalani Sitake.

Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham walks the field before playing against Texas in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on Jan 1, 2025, in Atlanta, Ga.

The reigning Big 12 champs will be CU’s last and most difficult home game of the season. Running back Cam Skattebo may be moving on, but QB Sam Leavitt remains. ASU nearly upset the Texas Longhorns in the College Football and will be strong again in 2025.

The regular season finale for both teams will cap off a rough two-game stretch for CU. The Buffs must travel to Manhattan after hosting ASU. Kansas State possesses one of the best quarterbacks in the conference in Avery Johnson and a solid defense.
