Red Sox acquire pitcher in minor trade with Pirates

For the third time in less than a year, the Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates have made a trade with one another.

The Red Sox Friday sent pitcher Chase Shugart to the Pirates and in exchange, acquired righthander Matt McShane.

Shugart had been designated for assignment earlier this week when the Red Sox needed to make room on their 40-man roster for the arrival of catcher Blake Sabol from San Francisco.

Robert Murray of FanSided was the first to report the news.

McShane was the Pirates’ 13th-round selection out of St. Joseph’s. He spent the last two summers pitching for Bourne in the Cape Cod League. He did not pitch for a Pirates’ affiliate in 2024 after being drafted by them in July.

Shugart, 28, was drafted by the Red Sox in 2018 out of the University of Texas in the 12th round. He spent seven seasons in the Red Sox minor league system before making his major league debut last August. He appeared in six games with the parent club, compiling a 4.15 ERA. At Triple A Worcester, he had appeared in 36 games, going 6-2 with a 4.46 ERA.

The Red Sox and Pirates have been frequent trade partners in the last year. Last July, the Sox sent infielder Nick Yorke to Pittsburgh in exchange for starting pitcher Quinn Priester. More recently, the Sox sent infielder Enmanuel Valdez to the Pirates in December and obtained reliever Joe Vogatsky.
