Red Sox Notes: Trevor Story Leads Slugfest To Start Homestand

Trevor Story longed for the chance to be a healthy contributor for the Boston Red Sox.

He’s doing that so far this season and had his best offensive game of the season. The Red Sox shortstop slugged a pair of three-run home runs that sparked Boston’s offense in a 10-3 victory to open the four-game series against the Chicago White Sox.

Story took advantage with runners in scoring position and set the tone for the Red Sox to cash in all night at Fenway Park.

“It’s big, man,” Story told NESN’s Jahmai Webster. “Any time you come up with runners on base, you want to come through for the boys. Really just trying to keep it simple. Get a pitch I can handle. Took care of the mistakes tonight. I like that.”

“Two good swings,” Alex Cora told reporters, as seen on NESN’s postgame coverage. “He’s such a good athlete that we’ve taken away the thought process. He has a plan going in, but we give him the license to swing. Sometimes, it doesn’t look good, metrics-wise. People are critical about it, but I’m not. I want him to be an athlete in position to attack and execute. He’s been doing that.”

Story can be another X-factor in the lineup with plenty of talent as the contributing bat that can take Boston to the next level. Cora hopes Friday is a reminder of the home run and stolen base threat Story presents with the Red Sox.

“When he’s healthy, he’s 30-30,” Cora said.

“That’s the way we want to do it,” Story added. “Get on the starter early, see if we can get into that bullpen. We put together great at-bats all game. That got us momentum. Lot of great swings by the guys tonight. That’s the type of offense we know we can be.”
