Red Sox prospect promotions include SS ranked No. 4, two dominant pitchers moving up levels

Roman Anthony remains at Triple-A and a promotion doesn’t seem imminent after he left Friday night’s WooSox game due to a sore foot suffered when he fouled a ball off himself. But other Red Sox minor leaguers are moving up the ranks.

Shortstop prospect Franklin Arias (ranked No. 4 in MassLive’s preseason rankings of the system) has been promoted to High-A Greenville along with fast-rising lefty pitcher Brandon Clarke, according to a major league source, and southpaw Hayden Mullins is on his way to Double-A Portland. The series of moves represents the first round of promotions in the system since Opening Day.

Arias, 19, was ranked by Baseball America as the No. 76 prospect in all of baseball in the offseason. The Venezuela native dominated Single-A Salem after playing 36 games there last season, hitting .346 with four doubles, nine RBIs and an .804 OPS in 19 games. A strong middle part of the season could see him reaching Portland by year’s end.

Clarke (No. 19 on SoxProspects.com) and Mullins (No. 29) are two recent risers in the system. Clarke, a fifth-round pick out of a Florida junior college a year ago, is a 6-foot-4, 220-lb. flamethrower who turned heads in spring training, then allowed one run on two hits in 9 ⅔ innings (0.93 ERA) in three starts for Salem. In that span, he struck out 17. The 22-year-old is seen as someone who has the ceiling to become one of the very best pitching prospects in the system.

Mullins was Boston’s 12th-round pick out of Auburn in 2022. He had Tommy John surgery that delayed his professional debut until August 2023. So far this year, he has a 1.06 ERA while striking out 27 batters in 17 innings at Greenville.

Beyond The Monster’s Andrew Parker was first to report the latest promotions.
