The Boston Red Sox reportedly want Tanner Scott — but it’s going to cost them.
Scott, who was an All-Star in 2024, generally is considered the best reliever available in free agency. And a recent report from MLB insider Jim Bowden indicates Boston is the “clear” front-runner to land the star lefthander.
On Monday, MassLive’s Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam offered context to the Scott sweepstakes, including the potential pricetag attached to the 30-year-old.
“It’s a crowded market for Tanner Scott, who is going to set the slow-moving relief market when he does sign,” Cotillo wrote on the X platform. “The Red Sox have poked around on the high-end relievers and have cash to burn. (McAdam) has heard a $20M AAV is in play. I’ve heard likely multiple big-market bidders.”
Scott would be a massive addition to the Red Sox, who currently lack an established closer.
Luis Guerrero, Liam Hendriks and Justin Slaten are viewed as the top internal candidates, with Guerrero, who was developed as a closer, perhaps the most intriguing of the three after his impressive cameo late last season. Veteran Aroldis Chapman also has a wealth of closing experience, though his days as a top closer seemingly are over and he might be best suited for a setup role.
Scott immediately would become the top arm in Boston’s bullpen. In 2024, Scott posted a 1.75 ERA, 1.125 WHIP, and 22 saves across 72 appearances for the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres.
