Red Sox Rumors: Boston Looking Into Trade For Star Pitcher

The Red Sox have had a very splashy offseason, and they might have one more blockbuster move on the docket.

Boston substantially improved its outlook for the 2025 season by trading for new ace Garrett Crochet and signing Walker Buehler and Alex Bregman in free agency. The Red Sox now are pretty set to contend, but Craig Breslow and company apparently aren’t getting complacent with their new-look roster.

The Red Sox “have been in touch” with the Padres about a potential trade for Dylan Cease, per MassLive’s Sean McAdam, who cited an “industry source.” However, the source told McAdam that Boston’s current interest in Cease is more on the side of “due diligence” rather than an aggressive pursuit.

Boston doesn’t necessarily need Cease, as Crochet and Buehler are joined by Tanner Houck and Brayan Bello in what’s poised to be a very competitive starting rotation. However, you can never have enough great pitching, and Cease would help turn the Red Sox into one of the most legitimate 2025 World Series contenders, at least on paper.

Cease is on an expiring contract, so despite his status as one of MLB’s better starters, it might not take a loaded return package to pry him out of San Diego. However, after parting ways with a group of talented prospects in the Crochet trade, it’s unclear how keen the Red Sox are on shipping out more up-and-comers for someone who very well could just be a rental.
