Red Sox To Wear New, ‘Controversial’ City Connect Jerseys This Season

The Boston Red Sox will add a new City Connect jersey into their uniform rotation for the 2025 season.

And Red Sox CEO and president Sam Kennedy promised the new threads will be polarizing.

Kennedy didn’t give many details about the uniform when he appeared on MassLive’s “Fenway Rundown” podcast on Monday. But he basically confirmed that the jersey will be a shade of green and have a “theme with a certain wall in left field,” referring to the Green Monster.

“They will be controversial and I think you’re on the right track in terms of the color scheme you mentioned,” Kennedy said. “… I will say, though, nothing can be more controversial than bright yellow and those were probably among the most popular things we’ve ever done. So, I would say give them a chance.”

The Red Sox began wearing their yellow and blue City Connect uniforms, which were inspired by the Boston Marathon, in 2021. The Red Sox had tremendous success when they donned them, boasting a 35-13 record.

The yellow jersey isn’t going away and will stay in a rotation of uniforms that include Boston’s traditional home and away uniforms along with its red home alternates. The road blue alternate is being jettisoned.

This won’t be the first time the Red Sox have worn green jerseys. They used to do so in spring training on St. Patrick’s Day, but stopped the tradition in 2023.

Kennedy didn’t reveal a date for the first game the Red Sox will unveil their new City Connect jerseys, but he had a message for fans before they get all up in arms about them.

“I always have to remind people like my dad and others, these uniforms are not for you. They are for the players and for that next generation of fans,” Kennedy said. “And so, we’ll see how the next version of City Connect rolls out. And we’ll have news on that soon.”
