Red Sox Top Outfield Prospect Changes Number Ahead Of Second MLB Game

Boston Red Sox rookie outfielder Roman Anthony will be donning a new number when he takes the field for his second game in the big leagues, according to Tokyo Sports Press’ Carlos Yamazaki.

Anthony, who is currently ranked as the top prospect in MLB, made his Red Sox debut wearing No. 48 in Monday’s 10-8 extra-inning loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

When Anthony takes the field on Tuesday, he’ll be wearing a number that’s plenty familiar to the young slugger.

“I wore (48) in spring, and wore 19 last year in Triple-A,” explained Anthony per Yamazaki. “And then credit to Tom and those guys, called me this morning and ‘Hey, we’re gonna be able to get you 19.’ So I was super thankful for that.”

After going 0-4 and committing a substantial error on a Yandy Diaz single to right field during his MLB debut, Anthony will have another try at notching his first career hit when he bats fifth in the Red Sox lineup this evening.

No. 19 was most recently worn by Sean Newcomb before the Red Sox traded the left-hander to the Athletics on May 27.

Anthony and the rest of the Red Sox lineup will attempt to get back in the win column when they face Rays’ right-hander Ryan Pepiot (3-5, 3.20 ERA) at 7:10 p.m. ET on NESN.
