Reece Potter thought UK’s recruiting text may have been a prank

After taking over the reins for the Kentucky Wildcats, Mark Pope immediately made mention of identifying players who want to be a part of the program’s decorated history.

Many fans have found his desire to recruit and develop homegrown talent refreshing. Trent Noah, Jasper Johnson, and Malachi Moreno will all represent the Commonwealth on the 2025-2026 roster.

The Cats’ latest commitment, Reece Potter, will now join them and is a textbook example of someone who understands the gravity of playing at a place like Kentucky.

The 7-foot-1 Lexington native joins the Wildcat roster as a late addition from Miami of Ohio, where he averaged 6.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game. Potter shoots it better than 36% from deep and appears poised to thrive in Pope’s system.

You know what coaches always say – you can’t teach seven feet.

Potter himself was apparently shocked to hear from Kentucky assistant Cody Fueger and wondered if the outreach attempt was even legitimate. He made an appearance on the Aaron Torres podcast and revealed that he thought the text may have been a prank. That’s always a fair question with how things operate in the year 2025.

It’ll be a treat for the Big Blue Nation to cheer on a player like Reece Potter who will consider it a dream come true when he takes the Rupp Arena floor this fall. With some development and experience, he could prove to be a key piece for UK and potentially hang around his hometown for a while.

A quote released by Mark Pope sums it up perfectly.

“Reece Potter is a Lexington Catholic legend. He is a lengthy big who has a unique combination of mobility and skill. Reece can really pass, shoot, and protect the rim and fits into what we do exceptionally well. Most importantly, he truly understands what it means to wear the Kentucky jersey.”
