The Chicago Cubs know the National Central is wide open and there for the taking. So far, they’ve acquired a handful of players such as Kyle Tucker, Isaac Paredes and most recently, Ryan Pressly.
Despite reshaping the roster, the Cubs aren’t done yet. They’ve been involved in the Alex Bregman sweepstakes all offseason, and they’re not going down without a fight.
When the topic came up on Monday morning’s edition of “Hot Stove,” host Robert Flores mentioned the Cubs are “still actively involved in talks for Alex Bregman.“
Flores did not elaborate on just how involved the Cubs are for the two-time All-Star, but the interest appears to be at least somewhat significant. He also cited Kyle Tucker, Bregman’s former teammate in Houston, as potential motivation to join the Cubs.
If Bregman were to join the Cubs, it’s anyone’s guess as to what kind of contract he would receive, but Harold Reynolds provided some insight in the segment.
“He’s going to get a loaded up, opt-out deal as well,” said Reynolds. “We’re what, less than two weeks from Spring Training? …. I think it’s getting down to that point, a lot of similarities to Flaherty. You’re going to get the big money up front this year with an opt out or option they’ll pick up. I don’t see, he’s not getting six years.”
Reynolds’ prediction aligns with how teams have done business this late in the offseason with pitchers and catchers reporting as early as Feb. 12. If Bregman holds firm on his value of $30 million per year, you could see the Cubs go for a short contract of two to three years.
MLB Network also provided insight on what the Cubs lineup would look like with Bregman at the hot corner: The top four of the lineup would be Ian Happ, Tucker, Bregman and Seiya Suzuki. There aren’t many pitchers in the NL Central who would work against that group easily.
Signing Bregman would be the cherry on top for the Cubs going into 2025 and make them the favorite on paper to win the NL Central.
