Many are bewildered over the shockingly awful timing of the recent George Pickens trade, questioning why the Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t deal him at the 2025 NFL Draft — but according to recent reports, they tried and failed.
The Athletic’s Jeff Howe reported that the Steelers attempted to trade Pickens at the draft, but NFL organizations rebuffed their attempts:
“Word leaked during the draft that Pickens was available if anyone wanted him. Some teams polled by The Athletic at the time laughed at the idea of inviting Pickens into their locker room for any price, let alone a second-day draft pick. There wasn’t a lot of interest in talking with the Steelers about a trade.”
If other NFL teams truly “laughed” off a Pickens trade, perhaps the Steelers should have simply waited to move him until the 2026 offseason — when he could have posted the best numbers of his career alongside WR1 DK Metcalf and the potential addition of four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers, boosting his trade stock.
