Employing a general manager in college sports is now a necessity and the Pitt basketball program has their man.
Per college basketball insider Jeff Goodman, Pitt has hired former West Virginia director of recruiting Jay Kuntz as the program’s new general manager.
No official announcement has been made by the Pitt Athletics Department. Keep in mind, the university has never formally announced the hiring of Doug Whaley as the Pitt football general manager.
WV Sports Now’s Mike Asti has confirmed the news.
For 15 years, Kuntz had been a fixture in the West Virgina basketball program under former head coach Bob Huggins, serving as their Director of Player Personnel/Recruiting along with being their assistant to the head coach from 2017 till 2022 along with various other roles.
As the Director of Player Personnel/Recruiting, Kuntz oversaw all aspects of on and off campus recruiting, along with managing the NCAA Transfer Portal. Kuntz also was heavily involved in the NIL activities for the basketball program, working as the liaison between the basketball program and Country Roads Trust (NIL program).
Kuntz is a native of Wallingford, Connecticut and graduated from West Virginia in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in multidisciplinary studies and a master’s degree from WVU in 2014.z
This is obviously a major hire for the Pitt basketball program as the Panthers will look to secure major talent in the transfer portal as well as continuing to bring in high school athletes.
