Former NBA and Mississippi State basketball player Rodney Hood has announced his retirement from basketball, per an ESPN report.
Hood has been out of the NBA since 2022 and joined the Memphis Grizzles G-League team, the Memphis Hustle, on Feb. 11. An injury he sustained kept him sidelined this season and later forced a retirement, per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
The Meridian native played eight seasons in the NBA on six different teams. The Utah Jazz drafted him with the No. 23 overall pick in 2014. His highest-scoring season came in 2017-18, when he averaged 16.8 points and 2.8 rebounds.
Hood played high school basketball at Meridian and later committed to MSU, where he played one season from 2011-12. He transferred to Duke but had to sit out the 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules. He played the following season and declared for the draft.
The 32-year-old averaged 10.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists in eight NBA seasons.
Hood was second-team All-ACC in 2014, made the SEC All-Freshman team in 2012 and won the Clarion Ledger’s Mississippi Mr. Basketball in his senior year in 2011.
Hood helped lead Meridian to the 2010-11 MHSAA Class 6A basketball state title, averaging 24.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 3.1 steals in his senior year.
