Rosenberg named Head Basketball Coach at D3 Lewis & Clark College

Lewis & Clark College Director of Physical Education and Athletics Mark Pietrok has announced the hiring of Shanan Rosenberg as the new head men’s basketball coach, effective Friday, June 13.

“We are thrilled to welcome Shanan back to Palatine Hill,” said Pietrok. “He was a key part of one of the most successful eras in our men’s basketball history, and his return brings a deep understanding of what it means to be a Pioneer. Shanan is a proven program builder, both on the court and in the classroom, with a track record of sustained excellence and student-athlete development. We are excited for the future of our basketball program under his leadership and look forward to seeing the impact he’ll have on our student-athletes, our campus and the entire Lewis & Clark community.”

Rosenberg returns to Lewis & Clark 23 years after serving as associate head coach from 1999 to 2002. During his previous tenure, the Pioneers achieved a 66-19 record, won two Northwest Conference championships, and reached three consecutive NCAA tournaments, highlighted by an Elite Eight appearance in his final season.

“It’s with tremendous gratitude and excitement that I accept this opportunity to lead the Lewis & Clark men’s basketball program,” Rosenberg said. “I deeply appreciate President Dr. Robin Holmes-Sullivan, Athletic Director Mark Pietrok, the hiring committee, and the current players for their support and openness during this process. My family and I are thrilled about this reunion.”

Most recently, Rosenberg served as the head men’s basketball coach at Linfield University from 2013 to 2023, during which time he was named the Northwest Conference Coach of the Year twice (2017, 2020). He led Linfield to two NWC regular-season championships (2019-20 and 2021-22) and achieved a remarkable turnaround, transforming a struggling program into a consistent playoff contender. Under Rosenberg, the Wildcats recorded a 43-8 mark against Oregon NWC schools in his final six seasons and compiled a 20-5 regular season record in 2020, the program’s best in the NCAA Division III era.

Prior to Linfield, Rosenberg enjoyed unprecedented success at Foothill College, achieving the program’s best-ever regular-season record (22-5) in 2013 and guiding teams to eight postseason appearances in 10 years. His squads consistently excelled academically, highlighted by earning the California Community College Athletic Association’s Top Team Academic Award.

“Throughout the hiring process, it became clear Lewis & Clark is thriving,” Rosenberg added. “The campus-wide enthusiasm, sense of purpose, and beautiful facility enhancements since my last time here have been inspiring. As a former staff member, Hall of Fame team member, and lifelong supporter, I am deeply honored to lead this storied program again. I look forward to investing in our current student-athletes, staff, alumni, and future Pioneers.”

Rosenberg earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Davis and his master’s degree in physical education from California State University, Chico. At UC Davis, he was a three-year basketball letter winner, earned All-North Coast Athletic Conference recognition, and led the Aggies in rebounding in his final two seasons.

“We will endeavor to create new paths that can unite all generations of Lewis & Clark Men’s Basketball while striving to consistently compete for Championships,” Rosenberg concluded. “It is equally important that Lewis & Clark Men’s Basketball is known for its quality of people, its diversity of members, and the positive impact we create with and for our peers and our community.”
