There have been several changes in the Transfer Portal since college athletes have been allowed to transfer freely. That includes shortening windows where the portal is open. Now, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day wants to go further than that and only have one spring Transfer Portal window.
Day explained on the College GameDay Podcast that he only wants one portal window. That’s because of the chaos that comes with having the window open while teams are still playing their seasons in December and January.
“I do believe that there should be one Transfer Portal in the spring only,” Day said. “I think for us to try to do a Transfer Portal, like for instance, we had the Transfer Portal open and close before our season was even over. How do you even explain that?”
The winter calendar in college football has been widely discussed as an issue for coaches to manage. With the early signing period, teams are working to sign high school recruits. At the same time, they’re dealing with what tends to be a very active Transfer Portal period. On top of that, for those in bowl games or the College Football Playoff, there are important games to be prepared for.
“Then the Transfer Portal is open for our guys for five days after we finish our last game. So, the only people that are available is Notre Dame and Ohio State players where people can go and just go bid on them. We lost seven players when that happened. So, now you get into the spring portal and here’s a whole other conversation. If the contracts are going to happen because of the revenue share from July to June… or however we end up deciding on that,” Day said. “Then that’s when the portal should be open in my opinion.”
There would be challenges that come with only having a spring Transfer Portal window, too. For those trying to earn starting jobs, they’d lose vital practices at their new school, for instance. Still, Day sees a change like that as being a key factor in stabilizing college sports.
“It just makes sense to have one portal window,” Day said. “And I think if we can at least get that done, we’re at least making progress. If we get the enforcement done, one Transfer Portal, and then at least we’re moving in the right direction.”
Day has been relatively active in the Transfer Portal himself. Ohio State has the 10th-ranked transfer class in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings.
