Sacramento State president ‘optimistic’ about football’s FBS move

University president Dr. Luke Wood says he’s confident about the football team’s chances of moving up a level despite a ruling decision from an NCAA committee.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State University president Dr. Luke Wood says he’s confident about an upcoming meeting that could determine the future of the Hornets football program.

Reportedly, the NCAA Football Oversight Committee is recommending that the D1 Council to not support Sac State’s waiver request to transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest level of college football.

Despite the committee’s decision, Wood is encouraged about the football team’s chances of moving up a level. Currently, Sac State competes in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

“We remain optimistic. The meeting with the D1 counsel is next week. After that, we look forward to going to FBS,” Wood said in a statement to ABC10.

In April, Sac State filed paperwork with the NCAA to transition to the FBS. It came months after Sacramento State and city officials began pursuing a move to the Pac-12 after the conference lost several members to other FBS conferences. The two-team Pac-12 Conference will expand to eight members in 2026.

If Sac State is granted permission to move up to the FBS, it will join as an independent program, meaning the Hornets won’t be affiliated with a conference.

All of Sac State’s athletic programs officially moved to Division I in 1991, according to the university. The Hornets football program has played in the Big Sky since 1996.

Along with the school’s push to move up a level, university officials announced plans in September 2024 to build a new 25,000-seat football and multi-sport stadium.

Sac State is working with architecture firm Populous, which has designed other stadiums such as Target Field, Yankee Stadium, Colorado State University football stadium and Target Field.
