Sam Darnold can’t do it by himself with the Seahawks, so the Seattle organization gave him a big-name receiver. Cooper Kupp needs to help Darnold handle the transition to a new team.
Last week, the Seattle Seahawks made headlines in NFL free agency by signing former USC star quarterback Sam Darnold to a three-year contract worth nearly $100 million. A few days later, they made another major move to get Darnold a big-time target to throw to in the Pacific Northwest.
On Friday, Seattle agreed to a three-year, $45 million deal with All-Pro wide receiver Cooper Kupp. Kupp previously played for the Los Angeles Rams, where he spent the first eight years of his NFL career.
In 2021, Kupp put together one of the greatest seasons ever by a wide receiver. That year, he won the receiving triple crown, leading the league with 145 receptions, 1,947 yards, and 16 touchdowns. He led the Rams to a Super Bowl victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, where he caught the game-winning touchdown and earned MVP honors.
In the three seasons since, Kupp has struggled to stay healthy, missing at least five games in each of the past three years. However, his production has still been solid, reaching the 700-yard mark in all three seasons. Now, he will team up with Darnold in Seattle on a new-look Seahawks team.
Kupp is definitely past his prime, and will turn 32 in June. Seattle is hoping that he still has a few good years left in the tank, and that he can help elevate Darnold to be the quarterback that he was with the Minnesota Vikings this past season.
