The world of hockey has long been dominated by tradition, but Sarah Nurse is on a mission to change that. The Canadian forward, who plays for Toronto in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), isn’t just making waves on the ice, she’s also creating opportunities for young girls, especially those from underrepresented communities, to experience the sport firsthand. Through her “Nursey Nights” initiative, Nurse is proving that hockey is a game for everyone.

Sarah Nurse’s journey to the top of women’s hockey has been nothing short of inspiring. A two-time Olympic medalist and the first Black woman to win Olympic gold in hockey, Nurse knows firsthand the challenges that come with breaking barriers. That’s why she’s using her platform to open doors for others.
The idea for “Nursey Nights” started simply, she wanted to put her unused game tickets to good use. But with the support of her team and agent, the initiative evolved into something much bigger. Partnering with Rogers for a second consecutive season, Nurse provides young girls from organizations like Black Girl Hockey Club, Hockey 4 Youth, and Hockey Equality the chance to attend PWHL games, meet her in person, and receive exclusive team merchandise. The goal? To inspire and empower the next generation of female hockey players.

Impact of “Nursey Nights” on young athletes

For many of the young girls who attend, “Nursey Nights” is more than just a night at the rink, it’s a life-changing experience. Siyani Tadesse, a 14-year-old from Toronto, was awestruck when she met Nurse after a Toronto home game.
“Honestly, it inspired me. A lot of people get discouraged, give up. But Sarah Nurse, she kept going. That inspires me to keep going. No matter if people discourage me, I’ll just keep going.”
Axel Jazz Mojados, a 15-year-old who recently moved to Toronto from the Philippines, felt a renewed sense of belonging after meeting Nurse. “Sometimes I doubted about skating and, at first, I didn’t want to join hockey because it’s hard because you have to learn to control the puck and skate at the same time, and we don’t play hockey in the Philippines,” she said.
“I met someone who told the story of her first experience in sport, hockey, it really gave me the courage to try to keep going learning how to skate and doing sports.”

Sarah Nurse’s legacy in Women’s Hockey

Beyond her advocacy work, Nurse has had an illustrious playing career. She set Olympic records for assists and points at the 2022 Beijing Games, has won multiple IIHF Women’s World Championship medals, and became the first woman to grace the cover of an EA Sports NHL video game. Even after a recent injury placed her on Toronto’s long-term injury list, her commitment to growing the game remains unwavering.
“I think that it’s so special because I learn something new from them every single time I go meet them,” Nurse said. “I hope that I can impact like one of these girls, whatever field they want to do one day, whether it’s hockey or another sport, I just hope that I can continue to empower them.”
