The NCAA’s relaxed transfer portal policies have led to countless college football players changing programs every offseason.
It’s not uncommon for prospects entering the NFL draft to have spent time at two — or three — colleges before going pro. Even last year, the Denver Broncos‘ first pick in the 2024 NFL draft was Oregon quarterback Bo Nix, who started his college career at Auburn.
Broncos coach Sean Payton sees positives in the transfer portal for teams scouting prospects.
“I think from a scouting standpoint, it does give you more exposure to more people who are familiar with the player,” Payton said at the NFL’s Annual League meeting in March. “Some programs are more guarded with information, others, not so much. It also alerts you to possibly… OK. This kid has been here, he’s been here and he’s been here. What’s the deal? In Bo’s case, everything that’s positive about the portal and a transfer would be like his situation. [
“He] found a better fit, took advantage of it, excelled with a new team, new head coach. But it did give us multiple looks. I think that beyond just Bo Nix, I think, we’re getting past the COVID year this kid played or missed. We’re almost through that patch. We’re getting through the six years, seven years played. But we are still, and will always still have to deal with, ‘He was here, then here, then here, and let’s dig into why.’ I think it’s actually helped.”
The 2025 NFL draft will be held in Green Bay, Wisconsin, from April 24-26. Denver currently holds seven picks, and there’s a good chance at least one of the team’s new rookies will be joining the team after previously transferring schools.
