Seattle Mariners rookie third baseman Ben Williamson unleashed another web gem.
This was the most jaw-dropping one yet.
Based on AL rankings, Mariners made right call with offense
In the first inning of the Mariners’ series opener against the Texas Rangers on Friday, designated hitter Joc Pederson was jammed on an inside fastball from Seattle starter Bryan Woo and sent a flare into shallow left field. It looked like a sure base hit, but Williamson raced back, leaped into the air and made a full-extension, over-the-shoulder, diving grab to somehow rob Pederson of a single.
It was the latest in an ever-growing list of web gems for the 24-year-old Williamson, who was called up to the majors on April 15 to help reinforce a Mariners infield that was stretched thin by injuries.
In just his fourth MLB game, Williamson made a full-extension diving stop on a 120 mph grounder off the bat of Toronto Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. And just a few days after that, Williamson made a backhanded, highlight-reel play to rob Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman of a hit.
Williamson, a 2023 second-round draft pick, was hitting .260 with a home run and two doubles in 50 at-bats heading into Friday’s game.
Known for his elite defense, Williamson quickly rose through Seattle’s system after being drafted out of William & Mary and making his pro debut in July 2023. He was the Mariners’ first non-pitching prospect to reach the majors in 150 minor league games or fewer since catcher Mike Zunino in 2013.
