Sherrone Moore’s first full season as head coach at Michigan came with some ebbs and flows.
The first-time head coach got off to a bumpy start, with the defending national champions starting 4-3 and falling out of the College Football Playoff picture early.
Moore and the Wolverines redeemed themselves some down the stretch, winning their final three games — a stretch that included an upset victory over the eventual national champions Ohio State and ugly win over Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl.
So, where does that leave the second-year coach heading into 2025? CBS Sports is in the process of unveiling its rankings of the Power Four conference head coaches, with Moore checking in at No. 58.
That’s six spots lower than last year.
Writes CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli: “Moore was an interesting case last season as nobody was entirely sure where to put him. On one hand, he had very little head coaching experience, which usually leads to a low ranking among our crew.
“On the other, he already had a career win over Ohio State. Well, now that we have a full season in the books, our panel didn’t seem overly impressed with his first year at the helm in Ann Arbor.”
Moore, who turned 39 in February, finds himself in front of only three other Big Ten head coaches: Maryland’s Mick Locksley (59), UCLA’s DeShaun Foster (61) and Northwestern’s David Braun (64).
Even Big Ten newcomer Barry Odom (Purdue, 51) and Michigan State’s Jonathan Smith (49) found themselves ahead of Moore.
Rutgers’ Greg Schiano (43), Wisconsin’s Luke Fickell (40), Washington’s Jedd Fisch (39), Nebraska’s Matt Rhule (32) and Minnesota’s P.J. Fleck (27) round out the current poll, with more to come.
Moore is 9-5 as head coach at Michigan, where he served as interim coach during Jim Harbaugh’s three-game, school-imposed suspension early in the 2023 season. He also coached the Wolverines in their final three games, all victories while Harbaugh served a Big Ten-issued suspension, but was not officially credited with the victories.
