Providence-URI basketball rivalry
Here’s the thing about the Providence-URI basketball rivalry
- Two Providence women’s basketball players and one URI men’s player have entered the transfer portal.
- Pawtucket native Isaiah Miranda, after stints at NC State, Oklahoma State, and Green Bay, signed with Long Island University.
- The transfer portal closed to new entries in late April, but commitments are still possible through the summer.
Two departures for the Providence women, another from the University of Rhode Island men and a local player bound for his next destination highlighted last week’s college basketball transfer portal news.
Ugne Sirtautaite and Kaili McLaren will leave the Friars, Tyonne Farrell is done with the Rams and Pawtucket native Isaiah Miranda selected his fourth program since enrolling for the 2022-23 season.
The portal has been closed to new entries since late April, but commitments are still possible until deep into the summer. The majority of programs would hope to solidify rosters ahead of offseason practices, with the majority of their recruiting for 2025-26 already finished.
Let’s take a look at last week’s developments.
Sirtautaite announced a commitment to Fordham and McLaren will join the Vanderbilt staff as an assistant coach.
An international commitment from Lithuania, Sirtautaite played in 47 games and made a lone start with Providence over two seasons. She was a late pickup for new coach Erin Batth ahead of 2023-24 and carved out a reserve role in the frontcourt. Sirtautaite saw her minutes cut in half in 2024-25 and entered the portal at the close of the season.
McLaren departs for the SEC and a familiar face. Commodores head coach Shea Ralph was an assistant while McLaren played at Connecticut. McLaren was part of Batth’s initial staff and now reconnects with a fellow Huskies alum.
The Field of 68 reported Farrell committed to Morehead State early last week.
Farrell stepped away from URI in the middle of his debut season to address some off-court concerns. He was a two-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week who started in 15 of his 18 appearances. Farrell averaged 5.2 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.
Farrell opened with 14 points and seven rebounds against Fairfield and followed two games later with a double-double against Franklin Pierce. He matched a season high with 10 rebounds at Brown and netted 13 points in a home win over Central Connecticut State.
Miranda signed with Long Island early last week, the next stop on a winding road since leaving his home city for the prep ranks.
Miranda has spent college time with North Carolina State, Oklahoma State and Green Bay. He played in seven games with the Phoenix last season, averaging 4.0 points and 1.3 rebounds. Miranda didn’t appear after a Dec. 18 loss to Michigan Tech, and Green Bay was bound for a 4-28 disaster under first-year coach Doug Gottlieb.
Miranda left Tolman for larger stages at Woodstock Academy and Southern California Academy. He was a consensus four-star recruit who joined the Wolfpack for an NCAA Tournament run in 2022-23. Miranda was with the Cowboys for three games in 2023-24 and left for Green Bay the following year.
