Source: Chris Martin turned down more money from the Red Sox to join Rangers

Lucas Giolito will be ready to go

The Red Sox’ search for late-inning relievers continue.

While the team has already signed lefty Aroldis Chapman this offseason, joining the likes of Justin Slaten, Liam Hendriks and possibly Garrett Whitlock for late-game, high-leverage situations, Craig Breslow is still clearly in the market for more help.

That was a reality brought to light by the Sox’ pursuit of Chris Martin.

The Rangers announced Monday night that they had inked the 38-year-old to a one-year deal. But, according to a major league source, Martin actually turned down a more lucrative one-year offer from the Red Sox.

Martin said throughout the 2024 season he plans on pitching for another year, potentially capping what has been a 10-year big league career that also included two seasons in Japan.

The Red Sox’ interest in Martin is understandable considering his production during the two seasons with the Red Sox, who signed the righty to a two-year, $13.5 million deal prior to the 2023 campaign.

Martin was dominant in 2023, finishing with a 1.05 ERA, 2.44 FIP and 3.2 WAR in 55 appearances. Last season, his year was interrupted with pauses due to injury and anxiety. He still managed a 3.45 ERA and 2.78 FIP while striking out 50 and walking just three over 45 games.

Some high-leverage relievers that are still on the market include Tanner Scott, Jeff Hoffman, Carlos Estevez and Kirby Yates.
