HOUSTON – The Houston Astros and Alex Bregman are interested in a reunion, a league source tells KPRC 2 Sports.
The Astros “are keeping the door open, and so is Bregman,” the source told KPRC 2 Sports Thursday evening. Meanwhile, Houston continues to shop closer Ryan Pressly, with multiple teams interested in acquiring the Astros reliever, but Houston is reliant on Pressly waiving his full no-trade clause to get a deal done.

CAN BREGMAN RETURN TO HOUSTON?
Any deal with Bregman would potentially throw the current planned infield in flux. According to a report from USA Today, Bregman would get his old spot at third base back, newly acquired Isaac Paredes would move to second base, while Astros legend Jose Altuve would play left field, with Yordan Alvarez spending plenty of time as a designated hitter. A league source confirmed this setup has been at least floated.
The Athletic reported the 6-year, $156 million offer the Astros made to Bregman earlier this offseason is still on the table. The Astros are one of at least three teams to have offered Bregman a deal of five years or longer this offseason, four league sources tell KPRC 2 Sports.
CUBS AFTER PRESSLY, BUT ASTROS RELIEVER HOLDS THE CARDS
The Cubs are one of several teams interested in trading for Astros reliever Ryan Pressly, league sources say, but any deal would be contingent upon Pressly waiving his full no-trade clause. Pressly has not waived his no-trade clause, two league sources tell KPRC 2.
Houston has been shopping Pressly all offseason to offload the $14 million they owe him for the final year for his deal. Pressly had a 3.49 ERA in 56.2 innings in 2024 as a setup man to Josh Hader, after spending four seasons as the Astros closer. Pressly is among the greatest closers in MLB postseason history, with 14 postseason saves, which ranks 5th all-time. Pressly has a 2.78 career ERA in the playoffs, and pitched the final out of the 2022 World Series.
ALVAREZ HEALTHY AFTER NEARLY NEEDING KNEE SURGERY
Any potential move of an infielder to the outfield would have the health of Yordan Alvarez in mind. Alvarez said Thursday at the Astros fan caravan stop he was worried his late-season right knee injury was going to require surgery, but was able to avoid surgery.
“At the time of the injury there were a lot of doubts, and I didn’t know if I would need to get surgery or not,” said Alvarez through a translator. “But the last three or four weeks have been good, and I’m good to go.”
“There was a lot of damage, but it wasn’t enough damage to have surgery and my body’s been recovering good and I feel good to go,” said Alvarez.
When asked if he’ll be ready for Spring Training on Day 1, Alvarez said “Yeah, for sure.” Alvarez said he’s good to both hit and play the field immediately.
