It’s been a roller coaster ride for the first baseman, who struck out 171 times in 159 games in his second year with the Tigers. Detroit was expecting a lot more from their No. 1 pick after a bumpy rookie season, where he finished with a .203 batting average and only eight home runs.
In 2024 he hit .219 and struck out 105 times in 92 games. The organization thought it would be in everyone’s best interest to send “Tork” back down to the Toledo Mud Hens in AAA. The time in the minors paid off and the Tigers are seeing the results in 2025. Torkelson has an OPS of .879, he’s taking more pitches and getting more walks as well. He has 10 home runs, 28 RBIs and 30 hits in 36 games so far in the 2025 season.

Torkelson’s production at the plate has helped the Tigers climb to first place in the AL Central. “I’m seeing the ball better, and I feel dangerous at the plate,” Torkelson said. “As a hitter, that’s all you can ask for. You’re not going to hit 1.000. But when you’re feeling dangerous and you’re seeing the ball well, you feel like you can’t be beat. You’re going to get beat, but it gives you the best shot.”

Hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in professional sports, but it looks like Torkelson has figured something out with his swing and understanding major league pitching. He has officially made the leap from college to the pros with a little help from the Toledo Mud Hens along the way. “Coming out of college, I felt like I had it figured out, was the greatest hitter ever,” Torkelson said. “And I got humbled.”
