The Panola College baseball team opened their season going 2-1 against visiting Southern Arkansas this past weekend.
Panola won their season opener 11-6 on Friday, won the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday 6-1 in seven innings and dropped the rubber matchup 9-1.
Justin Anctil and Ashton Bennight each had two hits in the opener as both homered as Anctil had three RBIs and Bennight hitting a solo shot.
Jackson Glymph tripled with three RBIs, Josh Arquette singled with two RBIs, Brady Boles singled with an RBI and scored a run, and Brock Gainger singled and scored.
Derek DeVos got the win throwing four innings, allowing two hits, one earned run, walking none and striking out four.
In the second game Gage Driskell and Glymph both went 2-for-3 with Driskell adding an RBI and a run scored and Glymph scoring a run.
Tommy Mathay and Boles both singled with an RBI and scored a run.
Titus Von Kapff got the win on the hill throwing five innings, allowing one hit, no runs, walking none and striking out four.
Boles and Bennight collected Panola’s only two hits in the third game of the series as Gage Gundy scored the Ponies’ lone run after reaching base on a walk.
Panola will host Northeastern Oklahoma A&M for a three game series starting on Saturday at 1 p.m. A doubleheader will be played on Saturday with one nine inning game being played on Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
Panola Women’s Basketball
Awa Fane scored a team-high 14 points and added five rebounds, three assists and four steals but the Panola College women’s basketball team fell to No. 25 ranked and host Blinn 64-53 in a Region XIV Conference game on Saturday in Brenham.
Na’Kaylyn Wells scored 10 points with three assists, Ja’Nae Southall scored nine points while the foursome of Shaine Parker, Madison Caldwell, Gloria Tony and Hannah Carr all scored four points.
Panola trailed Blinn 32-19 going to the half.
Panola (13-6 overall, 3-2 Region XIV) will host Angelina tonight at 5:30 p.m.
Carthage Girls Basketball
Kaylen Igbokwe and Meriyah Lopez combined to score 29 of the Carthage Lady Bulldogs points in edging past host Spring Hill 33-32 on Friday in Longview.
Igbokwe had a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds to go along with a pair of steals, and Lopez scored 10 points with three steals.
Jakayla Teague filled the stat sheet with 12 rebounds, four steals and two points.
Carthage led Spring Hill 15-13 going to the half in the seesaw battle.
Carthage improved to 17-15 overall and 7-5 in district play following the game.
The Lady ‘Dawgs will host Cumberland Academy on Friday at 5:45 p.m., and it will be Senior Night.
Carthage Boys Basketball
Freshman Colben Foster found out just several hours prior that he was going to not only getting called up to varsity but that he was going to play.
Foster made the most of his first game on varsity by scoring a game-high 15 points as the Carthage Bulldogs basketball team picked up their first district victory of the season in defeating host Spring Hill 41-35 in a District 16-4A game on Friday.
Ahmaure Sheppard scored seven points and Kaden Gordon scored six for the Bulldogs.
Carthage trailed Spring Hill 20-15 going to the half, but the Bulldogs outscored the Panthers 18-6 in the final quarter to secure the victory.
An Achilles heel normally this season, Carthage hit on 15 of their 17 free throw attempts in the final quarter.
The Bulldogs will host Cumberland Academy on Friday at 7:15 p.m.
Gary Boys Basketball
Mason Powell scored a game-high 18 points and Kohl Woodfin scored 17 points as the Gary Bobcats basketball team turned a tight affair into a blow out in defeating visiting Timpson 52-30 in a District 23-2A game on Friday.
Powell added six rebounds and three assists and Woodfin five rebounds and three steals.
Gary led Timpson 29-28 going to the fourth quarter when the Bobcats outscored the Bears 23-2 in the final quarter.
Ben Stephens scored points eight points with eight rebounds for Gary who improved to 20-8 overall and 6-3 in district play.
Gary will host Tenaha on Friday at 7:15 p.m.
