Spring scrimmage scoop: College football QB intel from Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama and Florida

College football coaches at elite programs are reluctant to shed too much light on depth charts during spring practice — especially at quarterback — for obvious reasons. Naming starters too early in the year potentially torpedoes the depth chart once the spring cycle opens and the QB stuck with second-team reps hops in the portal for an opportunity elsewhere.

This is what personnel staffs deal with in college football’s new era. And never before has spring practice intel been this tight-lipped coming out of the first scrimmages for some of the sport’s elite programs, many of which are ditching traditional spring games this month in fear of free auditions for opposing teams in the spring portal cycle.

We tapped sources this week at Ohio State, Michigan, Florida and Alabama, four programs inside our way-too-early top 25 rankings who have intriguing situations at quarterback this spring for various reasons.
